Kingston, Jamaica – Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce, Senator the Hon. Aubyn Hill received a courtesy call by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) on Tuesday (April 25).
Among the topics discussed were the importance of IP rights protection and the use of IP tools as a critical and central component of economic development, particularly with the growing rise in the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to generate content and ideas
The courtesy call, made at the Ministry’s New Kingston office, formed part of Jamaica’s observance of Intellectual Property (IP) Week, which runs from April 23 to 30.
The week of activities, commemorated in April of each year, coincides with World Intellectual Property Day celebrated on April 26 by the more than 190 member states of the WIPO.
Representing WIPO were Director of the Division for Latin America and the Caribbean, Beatriz Amorim-Borher and Head of the Caribbean Section of the Regional Bureau for Latin America and the Caribbean at WIPO, Carol Simpson.
The Jamaica Intellectual Property Office (JIPO) was represented by Executive Director, Lilyclaire Bellamy and Copyright and Related Rights Manager, Shantal English.
Also in attendance were Minister of State, Dr. Norman Dunn and Permanent Secretary, Sancia Bennett-Templer.
