Since its inception as a pilot project in 2011 with 15 MSMEs, the Enterprise Development for Export Growth – Export Max Programme – has grown consistently to address the supply-side challenges faced by exporters and export-ready firms. With a sharp focus on enhancing internal capabilities encompassing finance, management, technology, productivity, and general business processes, the programme empowers participants to be competitively positioned in the global marketplace.
Over the course of 36 months, from September 2019 to September 2022, the Export Max Programme expanded its scope to include a diverse range of goods and services producing companies. This third cohort comprised 70% small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and 30% large companies, creating a dynamic ecosystem of collaborative growth. To ensure optimal support and success for this third iteration, JAMPRO forged strategic partnerships with the Jamaica Business Development Corporation (JBDC) and the Jamaica Manufacturers’ and Exporters’ Association (JMEA). These partnerships provided essential expertise, advocacy, mentorship, and unwavering support throughout the programme.
The latest round built on key features, such as company diagnostics, customized 3-year Enterprise Development Plans, targeted capacity-building initiatives, engagement of experts and mentors, and market penetration support. Throughout the programme, the Export Max cohort accessed new international markets, including the USA, Canada, UK, T&T, Panama, Japan, Brazil, Grenada, Barbados, Bahamas, Antigua, St. Martin, Martinique, Cayman, China, Dominican Republic, Sweden, and Zimbabwe. With the support of various market access activities, all 30 exporting companies within the cohort successfully entered new international markets, engaging with 190 new buyers.
During his keynote address at the ceremony, Senator the Hon. Aubyn Hill, Minister of Industry Investment and Commerce shared that “The Export Max Programme has played a vital role in strengthening our local exporters and positioning them for success in the global market. The achievements of this third cohort are a testament to their dedication and the effectiveness of the programme in fostering export growth.”
The closing ceremony also recognized outstanding participants with several awards. Portland Authentic Jerk Seasonings received the “Most Engaged Participant” award for their active involvement and dedication to the programme. Spring Gardens Processors was recognized as the “Most Improved Company” for their remarkable export growth. Home Choice Enterprise was honoured with the coveted “Top Exporter” award for their exceptional export performance and market penetration. Lastly, Shavuot International received the “Most Outstanding Company” award, acknowledging their overall excellence in export growth, market expansion, and business innovation.
Shullette Cox, President of JAMPRO, added, “The Export Max Programme has been instrumental in fostering the growth and competitiveness of participating companies. We are proud to witness their remarkable achievements and are confident that their success will contribute to the overall development of Jamaica’s export sector.”
The success of the Export Max Programme is attributed to the collaboration and support of various partners and sponsors. Among them are, the Bureau of Standards Jamaica (BSJ), Foundations for Competitiveness & Growth Programme (FCGP) managed by the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ), Scotiabank Jamaica, EXIM Bank, JN Bank Small Business Loans, Development Bank of Jamaica (DBJ), The HEART NSTA Trust, Trade Management Services (TMS), and Carbyne Capital Investment (CCI) have played a crucial role in supporting the programme and its participants.
“We are immensely grateful for the tremendous support and collaboration we have received throughout the Export Max Programme. The success of this initiative would not have been possible without the unwavering dedication and commitment of our partners and sponsors. Their invaluable contributions have played a pivotal role in empowering our participants and driving their export growth. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to all those who have been instrumental in making this programme a success,” expressed Senator the Hon. Aubyn Hill.
