The Standard covers general safety requirements of electrical appliances for household and similar purposes and outlines the necessary tests and safety conditions required to protect consumers against the hazards of electricity or electrical equipment. The launch was held at the BSJ’s Multi-Purpose Facility, Winchester Road, Kingston, on Friday, March 2, 2018.

BSJ Launches New Standard for Electrical Appliances

The Bureau of Standards Jamaica (BSJ) has launched a new standard that will cover general safety requirements for electrical appliances for household and similar purposes. Launched on March 2 at the Bureau’s office, in Kingston, the new standard, known as JS IEC 60335-1:2010 (AMD1:2013+ AMD2:2016), will also cover voltages for appliances not more than 250 for single-phase units and 480 volts in other appliances. Agri ministry calls for private sector collaboration to increase citrus production

Chief Technical Director for Special Projects in the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, Courtney Cole, is calling on the private sector to collaborate more with the Government in an effort to increase citrus production in Jamaica. Speaking at Citrus Day 2018 on March 2, Cole said that while there is a demand for some 4.5 million boxes of citrus annually; Jamaica was producing fewer than 2 million boxes. Ning Wang, Director of Food Safety Division 4, Import and Export Food Safety Bureau, Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine in China, speaking at a meeting with Dr. Osbil Watson, Chief Veterinary Officer, Avery Smikle, Acting Director of Fisheries, both from the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries; and Esmond Reid, Acting Undersecretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade on February 26. Gov’t Working with FAO to Develop Insurance Scheme for Farmers

The Government of Jamaica is working with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to develop an insurance scheme for crop and livestock farmers.
